Following a French Act of 18 December 1998 on access to law, a new role of “assistant juridique” has been defined, and according to the late legal specialist Jean Carbonnier, such a person is an “adoucisseur du droit” [softener of laws].

What a lovely way to put it, don’t you think?

The citation is to be found on the website of the association InfoDroits. Here is their definition of the assistant juridique:

“Juriste de formation, l’assistant juridique est à la fois un traducteur du droit et un écrivain public : comprendre une situation puis la qualifier juridiquement, expliquer en langage clair, orienter vers le dispositif ou professionnel compétent et aider à l’accomplissement des démarches et formalités.”
