Monday smile – Marmalade Droppers

marmaladeI happened upon this expression earlier this month: “marmalade droppers”. Also known as “muffin chokers” in the USA apparently. Defined by Macmillan dictionaries as “a piece of information, especially a newspaper article or headline, that is very shocking or exciting“.

You can read more about it here. Anyway this was all part of a turn of the year surge in lists of buzzwords and neologisms. Merriam-Webster decided that the Word of the Year for 2016 was “surreal”, along with “bigly” 😉 and “assumpsit” (?) (see here), and Oxford decided that its WOTY (!) was “post-truth” (here). The Terminology Coordination unit at European Parliament has a Neologisms Database that you might like to browse too.
