Online course on the German legal system & translation

E-learning. Laptop, diploma and mortar board.The company eCPD webinars is offering an online course on the German legal system, German law and legal translation from and into German.

The training course will take place on Tuesday mornings over four weeks in November 2013: 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th November, at 11:00 am UK time.

The Trainers

Angela Sigee is a fully qualified German lawyer who worked as a Rechtsanwältin in Germany and has been a freelance translator specialising in legal and financial translation from English into German since 1997. She has also taught on legal translation courses at City University since 2000 and given presentations for the NWTN, ITI, Salford University, the ITI German Network and Interp-Right.

Richard Delaney: Having been called to the Bar of England & Wales in 2002, Richard has worked as a lawyer in both Germany and England, as well as a specialised legal translator from German into English. He has lectured on DE-EN legal translation at City University, London.

The syllabus

5 November: Translating and Interpreting in a legal context, in particular between common and civil law systems. The legal process and the role of translators/interpreters within it. (Angela Sigee)
12 November: German law – institutions, sources and application. (Angela Sigee)
19 November: A practical session for translators working into German with Angela Sigee. On registration (or in September 2013, whichever is sooner) participants will receive two texts to prepare before the lesson. These should be completed and returned to the trainer at least one week before this lesson. During the session the trainer will discuss the points that the translations have raised.
26 November: A practical session for translators working into English, with Richard Delaney. On registration (or in September 2013, whichever is sooner) participants will receive two texts to prepare before the lesson. These should be completed and returned to the trainer at least one week before this lesson. During the session the trainer will discuss the points that the translations have raised.
