The final conference of the European Union project PICT (Promoting Intercultural Competence in Translators) is to be held on Friday 27 September 2013 from 9 am to 4pm at the Alliance Française in Paris.
The project was aimed at producing a comprehensive toolkit making it easy for higher education institutions within the EU to introduce intercultural communication into their postgraduate programmes in translation.
For legal translators, as readers will know, culture (and in particular legal cultures) is a particularly sensitive and complex issue, so I was very interested in this initiative. According to the documents available under project outcomes, legal topics do not seem to figure to any significant degree, although hopefully awareness of this aspect will be a natural extension of the work done so far.

Kaisa Koskinen, Professor of Translation Studies, University of Eastern Finland.
