Following last week’s post on the origins of simultaneous interpreting techniques, this short video, jointly produced by the European Parliament and the United Nations, gives an insight into interpretation at these two institutions.
A few quotes from the video: “The greatest job in the world”, “a constant test”, and “a primordial role to play in bridging the gap among cultures and civilizations”.
Parallels are drawn between interpreting at the European Parliament and the United Nations, and training, cooperation & exchange schemes are described, whereby interpreters from the two bodies can experience other methods and environments.
The shortage of interpreters is also raised: “…the market doesn’t really provide the necessary supply any more”.

Very inspiring! As a future interpreter, I don’t think of myself as a student, in my way to graduating I think of myself as a professional. I’d also like to get more experience. Is there a system of scholarships or internships for students? Any information will be welcome! Thanks!
