In view of the fact that many readers of this blog – for example legal translators, lawyers working internationally, legal interpreters, or lawyer-linguists – are self-employed, I noted with interest a recent review published by the European Commission’s Directorate-General Employment, Social Affairs & Inclusion entitled Employment and Social Developments in Europe. There are some very interesting findings on self-employment and entrepreneurship, including significant changes since 2000.

Conference – TransLaw2016, Tampere, Finland
An international conference entitled “TransLaw2016 – Translation and Interpreting as a Means of Guaranteeing Equality under Law“, on legal language, translation and interpreting, is to be held from 2 to 3 May 2016.
It is being organised by the School of Language, Translation and Literary Studies at the University of Tampere, Finland.

A couple of weeks ago, a man removed a 190-plus bottle display of nail polish from a store in Manhattan, New York. Police estimated the value of the goods at more than $1,500. In view of the dollar amount of the crime, the thief faces a charge of grand larceny.

The Institute of Linguistics at Adam Mickiewicz University is holding its annual event devoted to language and the law. This year will be the Eleventh Conference on Legal Translation, Court Interpreting and Comparative Legilinguistics (Legal Linguistics) and the 17th International Roundtable for the Semiotics of Law.
It will take place over 3 days – from 24 to 26 June 2016 (Friday-Sunday) in Poznań, Poland.

I’ve just discovered a new American word – “flub” – which according to my dictionary means “botch or bungle”. So I’m guessing we would use “fluff” for that in the UK.

Training for court translators & interpreters, Montpellier, France
The Syndicat national des traducteurs professionnels is organizing a two-day training course “Horizon justice française 6” to take place on 4 & 5 February 2016 in Montpellier, France. There are also optional visits of a prison and a criminal hearing on 3 February.
