NAJIT Annual Conference, Washington DC
The National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT) from the USA is holding its 38th Annual Conference in McLean, VA (Washington DC) from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st May 2017.
A(nother) million-dollar comma case
A few days ago a decision was handed down in a case which was all about the Oxford comma. The New York Times reports on the class action between three truck drivers and Oakhurst Dairy in an article entitled “Lack of Oxford Comma Could Cost Maine Company Millions in Overtime Dispute“.
Very little imagination is needed to extend this to how crucial such things might be in translation.

My ears pricked up (well, my eyes) when I saw a tweet by the relatively new blog Slator, ostensibly about NMT (Neural Machine Translation).

So I clicked through, and was pleasantly surprised to find an article which contains interesting insights into a law firm that respects the legal translator’s role.

Monday smile – Disorder in the American courts
To cheer up your Monday in the midst of what seems to be a pretty miserable time… I recently happened upon a book entitled Disorder in the American Courts, published in 2016.
It apparently uses “actual quotes, word for word, from real court proceedings!’, and is illustrated with some great cartoons that I’m sure you’ll enjoy.
