Stridonium, the international forum for professional linguists, will hold its one-day annual conference at the Møller Centre in Cambridge on 24 March 2014: Communicating in Business – Getting Language Right.
Stridonium was set up in 2009 as a venue for professional language specialists. Originally a private site for professional exchange and support for translators, it is now exploring alternatives to further the interests and raise the standards of the translation sector.
The third International Conference on Language and Law in Social Practice is to be held at the Royal Palace of Caserta, National School of Public Administration (Scuola Superiore della Pubblica Amministrazione), Italy, from 14 to 17 May 2014. This biennial conference (see this post and this post about the last one) brings together a wide variety of scholars and professionals, and those from the fields of language and the law, as well as other related areas. The Fourth International Conference on Law, Language and Discourse is to be held together with the Eighth Conference of China Association of Forensic Linguistics from October 18th-21st, 2014 at Northwest University of Political Science & Law in Xi’an, China. The theme is “Diversity & Integrity”.
There is currently a call for papers, with abstracts to be submitted by January 31st 2014.
The European Union’s Directorate-General Translation hosted a forum last October for the EU language industry to discuss the sector’s added value and best practices. Its title was ‘Joining forces for a stronger language industry’.
The event brought together language-industry stakeholders (service providers, companies of all sizes that require or buy language services, associations of professionals, etc.).
Videos have now been made available online, so all those who were unable to attend the workshops in person can now listen to the discussions in the comfort of their own computer!
Following her report on the Oxford Unitary (EU) Patent Conference, I am most grateful to welcome back to the blog Helen Smith, who attended the Horizon Justice Française 5 conference organized by the SFT Syndicat national des traducteurs professionnels, held in Bordeaux from 24 to 25 October 2013, and is going to give us an overview of what happened there.
The 5th Conference on Public Service Interpreting and Translation (PSI&T), an international event, is to take place on 4-5 April 2014 at the University of Alcalá (UAH) in Madrid.
A conference report has just been published on a boutique event held in Orlando, Florida in August this year called Finding the Parallels: Interpreting in medical and judicial settings. It brought together stakeholders from the health, legal and language service provision sectors.
I have just discovered that a conference is to be held on 7 November 2013 in Fribourg, celebrating 250 years of law in the town. It is publicized as being open to the general public, and will broach the following points:
How does language determine the content of the law? Is law translatable? What is the language of law? How do different cultures interpret the same international legal texts?
The University of Alicante in Spain has issued a call for proposals for an International Conference of Economic, Business, Financial and Institutional Translation to be held from 29 to 31 May 2014. The deadline for submissions has been extended to October 27 (so hurry up!).
