Symposium – Multilingualism and COVID-19

A two-day virtual symposium from 3 to 4 May 2022 will bring together stakeholders including United Nations staff members, government officials, university scholars, and members of civil society.

Focusing on the essential role that multilingualism must play in fostering sustainable development in the wake of COVID-19, the aim is to address linguistic challenges and innovative solutions with respect to Good Health and Well-Being (Sustainable Development Goal 3) and Quality Education (Sustainable Development Goal 4). Book publication: Multilingual Policy-Making in the European Union

The OAPEN network for open access books, funded by various European research councils and funds, has made available the title “The Language(s) of Politics: Multilingual Policy-Making in the European Union” by Nils Ringe and just published by University of Michigan Press.

Multilingualism is an ever-present feature in political contexts around the world, including multilingual states and international organizations. Increasingly, consequential political decisions are negotiated between politicians who do not share a common native language. Nils Ringe uses the European Union to investigate how politicians’ reliance on shared foreign languages and translation services affects politics and policy-making. Continue reading

Training – Multilingual practices

Future Learn, the MOOC consortium, is offering a free 4-week online course (3 hours per week) entitled “Multilingual Practices: Tackling Challenges and Creating Opportunities“. The course has been developed by the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

It explores central aspects of multilingualism in today’s globalized societies, such as cognition, policies and education. Continue reading
