Monday smiles – Kitty strikes back
Have a good Monday!
Book talk – Big Data and its Dark Side
I thought some of you might be interested in this talk at Harvard Law School by the authors of the book Big Data: Viktor Mayer-Schönberger, Professor of Internet Governance and Regulation at Oxford University in the UK, and Kenneth Neil Cukier, Data Editor of The Economist.
The art of the metaphor
Today’s post is neither about translation nor the law as such, but I thought you might enjoy this beautifully illustrated short animation on metaphor – especially in view of the number of metaphors that lawyers use. 🙂
The video is from TED-Ed, one of the growing number of TED endeavours, including TEDTalks (such as those included in these posts about medical patents, language and economics, plain language in Portugal, sleep and success, Google’s N-gram viewer, and crowdsourcing.
Conference – Legal translation, London
The Translating Division of the Chartered Institute of Linguists is organizing a Legal Translation Conference on Friday 28 June 2013 in London, UK, from 10.00 to 16.15 (registration from 09.30).
This full-day seminar is being generously supported by the European Commission Representation in the UK and will be held at its conference centre in central London.
Monday smiles – Words of wisdom
One can always rely on Winnie-the-Pooh for wise words. This week I have been at a conference, and I thought you would enjoy this lovely quote that was cited in a presentation by Anne-Lise Kjaer. I’ll be posting a conference report next week. In the meantime, here’s Pooh…
Do you think like a lawyer?
My preferred title for this post was actually “The Law School Admission Test or sudoku?”
The other day I came across the website of the LSAT (the Law School Admission Test). It forms part of the law school admission process in the United States, parts of Canada, and some other countries.
Conference – European contract law and property rights
The Society of European Contract Law (SECOLA) is organizing a conference – European Contract Law and the Concept of Proprietary Rights – that will take place on 7 and 8 June 2013 in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
Some examples of issues to be broached include:

- Transaction costs
- Information disclosure
- Securitization of contracts
- Collateralization of contracts
- Comparative law approaches.
You can download the full programme here, as well as information on registration and accommodation.
Multijurisdictional contract law database
I’m sure that a considerable amount of many legal translators’ work consists of contracts or agreements of one sort or another. The Society of European Contract Law (SECOLA) has a good resource, useful for both lawyers and translators – the EC Contract Law Database.
Monday smiles – The inequity of it all
Top of the morning to you all (or afternoon/evening in some time zones!). I hope you like today’s cartoon…
