Conference – Legal translation, London
The Translating Division of the Chartered Institute of Linguists is organizing a Legal Translation Conference on Friday 28 June 2013 in London, UK, from 10.00 to 16.15 (registration from 09.30).
This full-day seminar is being generously supported by the European Commission Representation in the UK and will be held at its conference centre in central London.
Guest post – An attorney’s view of translation
Today I am delighted to introduce Steven M. Kahaner, Esq., the founder and Executive Director of the legal translation agency Juriscribe, whose valuable comments some of you may have seen on this blog. Like other legal professionals that read WordstoDeeds, Steven is a lawyer who is genuinely interested in dialogue with translators and linguists. Not only that, but he is an American that builds bridges with Europe! Sorry to all those from the US out there, but you must admit that it’s not so common 😉 This is borne out, amongst other things, by his attending translation conferences (such as this one in Lisbon) and his membership in EULITA (the European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association). Survey: Calling those commissioning legal translations
Following last week’s post addressed to legal translators, I would now like to ask any readers that commission (or buy / procure / receive…) legal translations, or who know someone who does, to be kind enough to pass on or complete the simple online survey at this link:

The above survey forms part of the project, since one of the points I am looking at is issues encountered by those commissioning translations. My aim is that the project output could lead to improvements in industry practice.

Open seminar on legal translation, Portsmouth, UK
An open seminar is to be held at the University of Portsmouth in the UK on Friday 8 March, from 12 noon to 4 pm.

Conference – Legal translation & legal linguistics, Poznań, Poland
The Institute of Linguistics at Adam Mickiewicz University is to hold the Eighth Conference on Legal Translation and Legal Linguistics. The aim is to provide a forum for discussion in those scientific fields where linguistic and legal interests converge, and to facilitate integration between linguists, computer scientists and lawyers from all around the world.
The conference will be held over 3 days, from 28th June to 30th June (Friday-Sunday) 2013 in Poznań, Poland. Papers are invited on the following topics:
e-learning – EN/PT legal translation
Tradulínguas, the organizers of last year’s Lisbon conference (see my post here with a link to a report by Philippa Hammond) are offering an introductory course on legal translation delivered electronically. The trainer is Dr. Ana Soares, whose abilities as a lively speaker I can vouch for, having experienced them in person. She is registered as a lawyer in Portugal and as a solicitor with the Law Society of England and Wales, and teaches legal concepts at the Instituto Superior de Línguas e Administração in Lisbon, as well as being a legal translator.

Legal translation seminar in Kentucky
An Advanced Seminar in Understanding the Nuances of the Law in Spanish and English for bilingual legal professionals is to be held at the University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky from November 2-4 2012, comprising 19 hours Continuing Education Units.
Reminder: English legal terminology webinars
Just a reminder of my previous post – eCPD Webinars are presenting a series of five 1-hour webinars in June and July, on legal terminology in England and Wales. Of course, being webinars, they can be accessed from anywhere in the world, and if you’re not free at the time of the webinar, you can watch the recording later on.
The speaker is David Hutchins of Lexacom, who teaches law and terminology at face-to-face workshops and seminars, both to translators, and to lawyers from civil code systems who are less familiar with common law.
