A Notice of Open Competitions has been published by the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) to draw up reserve lists from which the European Parliament and the Council will recruit new members of the civil service as ‘lawyer-linguists’.
Competition languages sought are Spanish, Greek, Italian, Lithuanian, Maltese, and Swedish. Language 2 must be English, and Language 3 must be C1 minimum in French, German, Italian, Polish or Spanish (different from Language 1).

The British Library in London, UK is looking for a translator for a 12-month residency.
This is an exciting opportunity to become part of the life of the Library, to enjoy enhanced access to the Library’s collections and staff, to demonstrate how using these collections can inform the process of translation and to get involved in a range of activities to broaden audience engagement and participation.
Following my taster post last week, I have the greatest pleasure in announcing that « Common Law in French and Civil Law in English – Bijuralism and Bilingualism à la canadienne! » will be hosted by Quebec House, the Quebec Government Office in Pall Mall, London, UK.
The seminar on Monday 6 February 2017, which follows the conference #W2D2017 Legal Translation to the Next Level, will start at 12.30 pm and end, after time for Q&A, at 2.30 pm.
This should enable conference delegates, should they wish to do so, to fly out later that afternoon and avoid the costs of an extra night in London.
Following a couple of requests that I have received from participants and speakers, this post is to make you aware that we will have an “Authors’ Table” at the conference #W2D2017 Legal Translation to the Next Level.
This event is one of three that book-end the #W2D2017 conference – two before and one afterwards on Monday 6 February 2016.
In the late afternoon of Friday 3 February 2017, the leading Legal Translation Studies scholar and practitioner Łucja Biel will give a seminar entitled “EU Legal Translation: Past, Present and Future?“. The talk will be a practically oriented overview of major challenges and quality parameters in institutional legal translation in the European Union institutions.
In addition to the post-conference seminar Common Law in French and Civil Law in English – Bijuralism and Bilingualism à la canadienne!, I have great pleasure in announcing another event – this time before the conference, on Friday 3 February 2017 in the afternoon, entitled “A Practical Workshop on using Corpus Linguistics for Law“. There will be two workshops on that afternoon – the second one can be found here.
Inspired by a suggestion from one of the first participants to register, who explained that conference participants from outside the UK might like to extend their visit to London and maximise the use of their travel costs, we are now able to announce that #W2D2017 will be preceded and followed by two/three standalone legal translation events.
The 2016 edition of the report European Judicial Systems: Efficiency and Quality of Justice has just been published by the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ).
It evaluates the functioning of judicial systems in 45 Council of Europe Member States as well as in Israel, an observer state, and continues a process carried out since 2002, focusing on main indicators.
