Books for the beach

8326959134_7dfced61d0_zI keep seeing beach reading posts in national newspapers, but thought how nice it would be to share international titles amongst readers of this blog.

So do write in and tell us about your favourites, whether they be crime, legal or others, in their original language or in translation. For those in Australia and similar climes, please read fireside for beach!

I’ll start the ball rolling with a couple of collections of short stories from the Italian publisher Sellerio (whose catalogue includes many of the Montalbano books).

Research journal issue on crime fiction (open access)

crimefictionThe latest issue of The Journal of Specialised Translation is now available, including articles on crime fiction in translation, video interviews with crime fiction writers and translators, and reviews.

The journal is well-regarded and aims to create a forum for translators and researchers in specialised translation, to disseminate information, exchange ideas and to provide a dedicated publication outlet. Its issues are open access.

Puppet Masters

puppermasterI came across a great resource packed with information about corporate and financial structures – The Puppet Masters – a report published by the Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative (StAR), which is a partnership formed by the World Bank and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to help end safe havens for proceeds of corruption and to facilitate more systematic and timely return of stolen assets.

Kevin has just published his first book – a collection of odd laws called The Emergency Sasquatch Ordinance (And Other Real Laws that Human Beings Actually Dreamed Up, Enacted, and Have Sometimes Even Enforced. The publisher is the American Bar Association.
