Conference – Language and law ‘in paradise’ (Brazil)

800px-Florianopolis_SAntonioLisboa_beachActually ‘paradise’ is just my interpretation 🙂 – Language and the Law – Bridging the Gaps is the first international conference to be jointly sponsored by ALIDI (the newly formed Association for Language and Law for Speakers of Portuguese) and the IAFL (International Association of Forensic Linguists). The official languages of the Conference will be English and Portuguese.
The conference will be hosted at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in FlorianĂłpolis, Brazil.

Conference – Language issues in EU law, Opatija, Croatia

800px-Opatija_HafenA multidisciplinary international conference is to be held in Opatija, Croatia from 19-20 April 2013, entitled Language Issues in EU Law in the light of Croatian Accession, at Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence.

A wide range of topics will be covered: EU multilingual lawmaking, theoretical approach to legal translation in the EU, legal translation and comparative law, the impact of English on the translation of EU legislation, interpretation of multilingual legislation at the CJEU, multilingualism as an obstacle to harmonization, the call for a new legal culture, the fiction of autonomous EU legal concepts, creating Croatian terms for EU legal concepts, role of the Croatian language in the EU, new challenges to Croatian judges, implementation of Directive 2010/64/EU regarding the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings, and others.

Target audience: lawyers and linguists from academia, translators, court interpreters, judges.

Seminar – Justice interpreting: The need for quality standards, London, UK

Conference – Challenges to professional translation & interpreting in the justice sector, London, UK

800px-London,_Canary_Wharf_from_Thames_2011-03-05The UK’s Association of Police and Court Interpreters (APCI) is organizing its first international conference, as well as hosting the 3rd General Assembly of the European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association (EULITA). The conference is to be held in London, at Canary Wharf from 5-6 April 2013. There will be pre-conference drinks the evening before.

2013 is the year in which Directive 2010/64/EU on the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings is due to be transposed into the domestic legislation of all 27 Member States. The conference will discuss the theme “Challenges to professional translation and interpreting in the justice sector“. More details can found on the conference website.
